I’m Helen.

I live in a house on the top of a hill in Toronto, Ontario. I work from home, often to the sound of children playing in the schoolyard out back.

Though Stephen King discourages the use of adjectives ending in -ly, one could say that I’m writerly — that I always have been. You see, I LOVE words. For me, my love affair for the English language had already begun by age seven (probably before) when I wrote (and illustrated!) a story for my little sister. “There’s a tiger under my bed” received critical acclaim, eliciting comments such as,

Brief but interesting idea.” ~ Mom

and

Nice thought, Helen.” ~ Dad

This stumbling beginning smoothed into decades of writing, proofreading, and editing all sorts of lovely things for all sorts of lovely people. Think blog posts, successful grant proposals, media releases, web content, and promotional materials for entrepreneurs, artists, charities, and quaint-but-established start-ups. The Communications Distillery is a proprietary blend of this love of words with my history in the non-profit sector facilitating strategic planning sessions, mission and vision days, a variety of workshops, and coordinating events. I also have certificate training in compassionate listening, something I believe is integral to communications of any kind.

Outside of The Communications Distillery, I am an amateur meditator, a storyteller, an introvert, a blogger, and a lover of great food and close-knit community. I believe in integrity. I love biting cherries right off the tree. My favourite chocolate is very dark and fairly traded. I have a huge soft spot for people doing good work.

The Communications Distillery is building a community while it runs a business. That means that I want every working relationship to be a supportive one. I don’t work for you; I work with you. I want your business to thrive through clarity of message and connection with your audience. I make your day easier so you can get back to what you really love. It’s that simple.

“Sometimes, when I sit down to write something for my business, I get a little nervous. What if people don’t understand me or take what I’m trying to say the wrong way? It’s so important to say what you mean and mean what you say. When I need someone to look over something before I send it out into the world or when I just don’t know where to start on a project, Helen can always help. It’s such a relief to me that she’s just an email away. Helen makes any task involving words seem easy and her suggestions always manage to make me sound clever and witty even when I’m having an ‘off’ day.”
